Irons

Irons are used on most every hole and cover everything from chip shots near the green, short and mid-range shots from fairway, rough or sand, and long shots from the tee on par 3s.

Irons listed for sale are usually sold as a set along with many numbered irons, these sets are generally named as “3-PW, 4-PW, or 5-PW”.

The ‘face’ of the 3 iron has the lowest loft (around 20 degrees to the vertical) - and hits the ball low and long – in the region of 180 meters in the hands of a good player. At the other end of the scale you’ll have a pitching wedge (around 50 degrees loft) or sand wedge (56 degrees) which hit the ball high, but not as far – around 90 meters.

The irons in between – 4 iron, 5, 6, 7 etc fill in the yardage gaps – as a rule of thumb there’ll be around 10-14 meters difference between each club.

Forged Irons

Using a softer metal than cast irons, forged irons are often said to have a better ‘feel’.

Cast Irons

Aimed at low handicappers, most irons are made by casting as this process allows manufacturers to design more creatively.

Muscle Back or Blade Irons

Blade irons are designed for the game’s better players and feature a thin face, a thin top line and a compact hitting area. Blades generally distribute weight evenly throughout the entire head, producing a small "sweet spot" in the centre of the head.

Because more weight is placed behind the sweet spot it offers more feel and ability to shape a shot than a cavity back, hence why blade irons are sometimes referred to as muscle backs.

Cavity Back Irons

A cavity back iron is a club that positions a recess or cavity in the back of the head, concentrating more weight on the perimeter. By adding more weight to the edges of the clubhead, manufacturers are able to increase the Moment of Inertia (MOI) or forgiveness of the club. Typically a larger clubhead will be paired with a thin clubface, which means off-centre shots fly longer and straighter than an off-centre shot with a blade iron.

This increased forgiveness reduces feel and means that the cavity back iron is more suited to mid to high handicap golfer who benefit from the larger sweet spot.

Shafts

Steel Shafts

Steel shafts are the most popular option and are considerably cheaper than graphite shafts. More durable than graphite, it offers consistency of flex and torque throughout all of the irons.

Graphite Shafts

Lighter than steel shafts, graphite shafts absorb vibration better than steel shafts but offer less feedback on impact.
